(The roleplay was originally started by Thrillex at wolf-forum.forumh.net. It was the longest-running roleplay on the website, the first to be split into two topics. It was later moved over to its own site.)
One early spring morning, a mother wolf named Chinook nursed her two newborn daughters, Jade and Ayashe, as her mate, Storm, pulled home a deer he had caught. While most mother wolves wouldn't let anyone near their pups, even their own mate, Storm and Chinook were especially inseparable, with a trust perhaps never repeated by any of their descendants.
However, their pups, sisters with dramatic differences, had a very different story. From the very beginning there was a competitive rivalry between them. Though Ayashe was only quiet and confident, Jade would jealously sabotage anything her sister tried to do as best she could. The white, bratty pup would trick Ayashe into burning herself, mock her, and tease her for being smaller and uglier, but deep inside Jade only wanted to steal the dominance her sister kept sealed in her heart.
Jade never had the same relationship with her parents as Ayashe did, either. She constantly rolled her eyes defiantly and ignored their commands, even when she herself could judge that their ideas were better. She would often run into the forest against her parent's will and find her best friend, Raven, a similar pup of a loner. They would converse about their hatred for parents and Ayashe. Storm believed Raven was a bad influence on her and tried to keep them separated to no avail. As a result of all this, Chinook was continuously coiled in the conflict between her family.
In contrast, Ayashe was a quiet, dark-colored wolf, her spirit concealing the confidence and stability of an alpha, though her left back leg was crippled. She was obedient and adventurous, jumping to the idea of eating meat when her fangs came in, which quite disgusted Jade. Ayashe and her father had a close father-daughter bond, and while Chinook struggled to keep the family together Storm taught her through play to live on, despite her disability. He even saved her after almost drowning while they played in the river.
But, though the two sisters were already bitter rivals, the turning point came when Storm went out to hunt and was attacked by a pack of six wolves: Lucas, Juniper, Forsaken, Erin, Seimus, and August. Storm quickly fled after being scraped a few times and warned his family. Everyone was alarmed except Jade. She was convinced, though at the time she was only six months old, that she could fend them off. Chinook tried to get her to think more practically, but soon gave up and prepared to move to a new territory. However, as they all turned towards a new destination, the rival pack jumped out of the brush and tackled them. As Storm fought for his pack's safety, Chinook commanded her pups to run. Ayashe did as she was told but her path was quickly cut by Seimus, the omega of the rivals. He lunged at her, but to his surprise Ayashe bit his nose and, while he was dazed, she ran out ahead.
However, Jade did not follow her mother's orders. She wanted to help fight and prove herself. Panicking, Chinook risked her life and created a distraction to confuse the rival pack to give her daughter more time to leave. She snarled at the little white pup to run, trying to scare her away. But though Jade was crying now, she wouldn't leave. The wolves regained their wits and charged for Jade. Chinook yelled at her to leave one more time, and though she rolled her eyes obnoxiously, she finally did.
But the time Chinook had lent her family was up; she didn't have enough time to escape for herself, and couldn't resist as Forsaken, the beta of the rival pack, sunk her own bloody fangs into her throat unforgivably, and tossed the body on the dirt.
Storm fought the rest away, but in the last few minutes of the battle after Chinook's death they seemed ready to retreat anyway. The alpha male turned and saw the limp body on the ground, eyes revealing a torn heart, dripping with tears, each drop concluding with unimaginable pain and agony. As the family regrouped, he let out a mournful howl and proceeded to lay by the body, a distraught Ayashe by his side. After she'd cried herself to sleep, he rose up and sat by the river, a blank expression locked with a chain of utter sorrow and anger. He simply cleaned the blood off his face, and sat.
Jade knew inside that it was her fault her mother had died and awoke Ayashe with her crying. Enraged at her sister, Ayashe rose and proclaimed Jade a murderer. Though Jade believed her words, her pride took over and she argued against the name. Soon the debate switched into a subject of dominance, to a fight for the alpha pup. Ayashe pinned Jade to the ground and tried to force her sister to submit, but the white pup was only angered and viciously fought back. They skirmished for a moment before Ayashe slammed Jade against the ground one last time and called it a warning, at which time Jade gave in. Afterwards, Ayashe cleaned her sister's wounds and they apologized to each other. But they fully recovered from that fight, and their mother's murderer was still out there somewhere.
Six months later, the two had grown into yearlings. Storm was still upset and grew thin from malnutrition, for he rarely ate now, and his memory was growing weaker. They had all moved to a new den and territory, and the rival pack had taken their old den and had two pups, brother and sister, Windsong and Omitaa.
Though the small pack didn't realize it, Chinook was still with them as a spirit. She looked over her daughters as they grew, sometimes appearing in their dreams. She could tell now that Ayashe was the alpha of the two pups, and one day subtly lured her to a young male of the same age named Zack.
Storm didn't take kindly to the male, while Jade envied that he had chosen her sister and not her, but despite their feelings Ayashe and Zack took over as alphas and, six months later, led the pack to a new den to start their own family.
Jade managed to sneak Raven and her newer friend, Paul, into the pack, though Raven was quickly kicked out after disobeying Ayashe. Gradually, Jade sunk from beta to subordinate to omega, and over time she began to truly hate her sister. Several times, Ayashe threatened to send her unruly sister into exile, but, though she often did act like a loner, Jade kept herself in the pack. The white omega was hot-headed and short-tempered, and to ease herself she annually ran off and played carelessly with Raven and Paul, along with other friend's she'd made, and dream of starting her own pack with them. Being an overall gorgeous wolf, males would occasionally follow her in awe. But, despising her own sister's relationship and not wanting to be the same anymore, she refused them all.
During the first month of life in the new den, Ayashe came across a rather jolly Moon Seeker, a slightly distraught ex-alpha of an exterminated pack. The two became friends and eventually Moon Seeker became beta.
Jade hated Moon Seeker only because her sister liked her. But she underestimated the ex-alpha, as she held a secret strength, revealed a little after Moon Seeker had first joined the pack. Jade mocked the female for her constant happiness, but was quickly and shockingly countered by a successful lunge to Jade's neck. Afterwards Jade feared her, and soon, overwhelmed by the hatred the pack portrayed to her, declared she hated everyone in it. She even believed she was glad that Chinook was dead.
One night, Moon Seeker visited what looked like a pile of rubble and, with a sorrowful expression, laid down by it. At the time, Storm had been on patrol, when he saw her. He came over and asked about it, and Moon Seeker explained her horrible luck: her pack had been killed by hunters, and she had managed to protect her only pup. The pup was her life; to ever leave it alone would be misery. But she was starving, and the pup needed milk, so she went hunting. When she returned, a coyote had found her den and was killing the pup. Panicked, she chased it down and killed the murderer, but it was too late; her pup was dead. She then explained that she buried the pup under those pebbles, and visited the site every night.
Storm laid by her and comforted her with a heart-to-heart talk, soon laying to rest her tears, convincing her to move on, but never to forget.
That same night, Jade walked in on Ayashe and Zack mating and threw up in disgust, half because of the sight, and half because she didn't want to see her sister's pups. She begged her father to stop them, but Storm only retorted for her to leave them alone. Still, Jade fought, but Storm managed to make a point that she wasn't his daughter anymore, that he hated her and thus abandoned her. Taken aback, Jade went into the den with Paul. Sympathetically, Paul growled at Storm.
Taking it as a threat, Storm challenged Jade's friend with a defiant snarl. Paul did the same, protecting Jade, and though the white wolf begged them to stop they tackled each other, Storm keeping dominance. Eventually, Paul was defeated, and as the old alpha glared at them both, eyes ablaze with satisfaction, Jade mended Paul's scars.
Soon, the action fell, and everyone slept. Moon Seeker had returned and slept awfully close to Storm, Ayashe was curled up with Zack, and Jade was in the den with Paul.
A few weeks later, Ayashe was quite plump with pups on the way. She gathered the pack and announced that the den was now reserved for her and her pups, and that no one else would be allowed. Jade was annoyed; she believed that Ayashe's pups would ruin her life. Still, she was in no mood to fight that day, and she simply nodded with a roll of her eyes. She spoke to Paul about her worries and was overheard by Ayashe, who quickly rose up and threatened her, making sure to remind her she was an omega. Frustrated, she went off a little ways and dug herself her own den. She sat in it for quite a long time, slightly growling to herself as she thought bitterly of her pack. Soon Paul found her and sat with her, nuzzling her cheek.
A few days later, the pack went hunting and caught an elk. Knowing she could have her pups at any moment, Ayashe stayed behind, and when her mate howled for her she couldn't respond. Worried, the pack head back home.
